Border-crossing – the mental divide of real space and illusion

Whenever we travel outside of our habitual or cultural environment, we cross borders – mostly in the confines of an airport. In spite of our ability to instantly travel between countries and continents on the internet, where we call this digital ‘nearness’ the global village,  the physical reality reflects the reverse situation.  The core of physical border crossing is identity control.  The individual crossing the border must obtain permission to do so. Since the beginning of recorded history, the acquiring of territory and maintaining of borders has been the primary source of war, conflict and abuse, and this situation has not changed up until today.  Yet, there is no reality to the idea of borders and border-crossing because it is a conceptualisation of the mind that is imposed in a top-down manner onto physical space. Borders are an accepted illusion, there is no tangible equivalent from which borders spring forth and manifest in the world.  In other words, borders are not real, they shift and change depending on who is in charge and has the power to rule over others in form of states, nations, and countries.

When travelling between claimed territory by plane, airport border controls are laced with a thick procedure of security checks that encompass the inspection of luggage and physical bodies with the aim to minimise potential security risks for the country that is opening its gates for us. In my experience, all border crossing check points look the same with only one changing variable, which is the language spoken because it changes from border to border.  The agents in charge of checking travellers wear uniforms, they sit behind computers, scanning devices, and other machines which process information about each person who crosses the border.  Fascinatingly enough, the border-crossing personnel assesses each person not as the physical person that stands right in front of them. No, the assessment is done based on a proxy, the conceptualised idea about a person which is displayed in form of an image on a computer screen. We, the travellers, are not privy to this information, we can assume that a part of it contains our personal details such as name and address, yet the remainder, of what lurks on these screens and refers to us, is shrouded in mystery.

There is a sense of togetherness when going through the long haul of border-crossing and security check points.  Frequently a conversation pops up between fellow passengers. At the end of the conversation everyone participating is reassured that we are united in this ‘humiliating situation’, when we are stripped of shoes, belts, jackets and hats because our potential is perceived as threat to the world. Even when queuing with a more reserved crowd that not easily engages conversationally, the sight of a little child or an elderly person having to submit to the procedures will prompt us to verbally point out the ridiculousness of these controls. But how ridiculous are they really when we bring the point home to self and see what it is that we don’t want to see about who we are? We unite in complaining about check-point procedures because we don’t want to see beyond, what underlies this situation and how it unanimously implicates each one of us.

 When we realise that what is happening in real-time is equal to the inner reality that we carry around in our minds, we can start to investigate and step beyond the accepted self-victimisation.  We stop to believe that submitting to a ‘humiliating situation’ is engineered by an evil government that blindly enforces its laws and we realise that the powerlessness we experience is the perception of the mind as we allow and accept it.  We are the borders, the territory, the security checks, and we victimise ourselves daily.  Our own borders are just as imaginary as the borders we create in physical space to divide the world into countries and nations.  Our claim to territory is to prevent us from self-change.  What we defend are our limitations and how we have programmed ourselves in separation and division from others at every opportunity where our self-interest is threatened.  We use self-talk to validate the behaviors we enact to keep our borders intact. But here it is not about others being admitted inside, it is about us preventing ourselves from stepping outside our habitual territory so that we move ourselves into a new space where we can decide freely who we want to be in this moment, in this context, with these people.

This self-talk is our security check point, it is powerful beyond recognition. It contains every justification we launch in our minds to remain where we are – trapped and limited.  On an individual level, we deploy a personal arsenal of justifications that we can tailor to each situation. These mental security measures are extremely well-placed and they make so much sense that when we are in a given situation, where we have the opportunity to trespass our limitations, we are unable to recognise what we are doing to ourselves. We may have a glimpse in hindsight of what could have been, who we could have been, but the situation is gone and we will have to wait until next time…

In the meantime, there are reassuring conversation with fellow minds to be had – somewhere – on the internet, in the streets, at the airport,  where we reassure ourselves that change seems so impossible with the ultimate justification: because we are a victim of human nature.

From “system” equality to Destonian equality, or how I learned to understand the meaning of equality

Before I became a Destonian, I was unable to understand the true sense of equality. Even though it was clear to me that all people should be equal and that differences related to gender, sexual orientation and race – among others – are a non-issue when it comes to equality. There is no doubt that these are big issues in the world that are founded on prejudice causing injustice and inequality; and furthermore there is no doubt that these so-called issues can only be tackled when we collectively come to the realisation that we are equals no matter of gender, sexual orientation and race, or what else we use to excuse our self-interest and superiority. This was my view then, which entailed that equality is a legal right that is practised in accordance to the law where everyone is guaranteed the same rights without exception.

This type of understanding of equality is convenient, of course. It primarily looks at equality as categorical, rather than fundamental, to-be-applied-as-necessary qualifier. By doing so it implies that the basic system we live by, our society, is in its manifold operational and functioning appearance a valid system to begin with. From this perspective the essence of equality supports the perpetuation of the system’s dynamics, which in actuality are there to keep us separated from each other by reinforcing the categorical distinction of irrelevant differences that are invented by the mind.

A practical example of this perspective I recently saw when I was packing up documents in the process of getting ready to move to another country. I came across my last employment contract which I had not yet put in its appropriate place so all the addenda one usually receives in conjunction with a contract was still there and had not been weeded out yet, as I usually strip away all bureaucratic fillers to keep only the most important part of the document. Hence, together with my contract I retrieved a paper that explained that my employer, an institution, was an ‘equal opportunity employer’. In several paragraphs it was outlined how various aspects, such as age, gender and disability, were guaranteed not to influence my participation in a career with the institution.

I remember reading these types of flyers before, at other occasions when I entered employment or some contractual relationship in the employment business. Generally I would acknowledge such a flyer as a ‘good’ thing that the institution or company is at least trying to do their best. At times I even considered myself lucky to work for an equal opportunity employer, I felt that this approach was politically correct. Today of course I know that this is deception because all equality in relation to something else that is already from the starting point unequal can never be made equal by applying equality on limited terms.

The fact that I had this contract with the institution makes this clear. I come from a middle class family; I have education; I am fed and have shelter. In other words, I have all my basic needs met. Anyone who does not have those prerequisites for this ‘opportunity’ can never have this job, and no employer would give them a job on the basis of being an ‘equal opportunity employer’. The equality mentioned in this context is a patch to a system, a system that is intrinsically flawed and needs constant upgrades and repairs. This makes the use of equality a form of bargaining chip, rather than what it is – a principle.

When I became a Destonian I realised that as long as we apply equality to fix an existing problem caused by the system, we are working from delusion because we do not recognise that the problem is there because the system is build on inequality and hierarchy. It is fact that the cultural and economic world systems are established on inequality through competitive practices, and losers can never be equals in these systems. Losers and winners are not self-determined ways of existing that we choose for ourselves, even a loser-in-the-self-making in a wealthy country is not comparable to a loser who is born to be starving for the rest of his life. From this perspective we can see that attention given to perceived differences such as gender, sexual orientation and race are little patches that cover up the distinct mechanism of inequality which underpins every cultural and economic system on the planet.

Continuing to apply equality-as-patch will just continue the convoluted bureaucratic systems that we have always experienced throughout recorded history, and which have become increasingly inscrutable where individuals as well as businesses make their way through the system by deploying abusive practices. For me the conclusion was simple at this point, equality has to be created as foundation to the system we live by – meaning the only solution is to work on the roots of the system which means we have to revise the entire system to one that is build on equality from the starting point. With such a system, perceived differences such as gender, age, sexual orientation, disability and race will no longer need any attention because there is no need to “fix something that is not broken”.

So, for me to be a Destonian is, among other things, the recognition that we need equality as a starting point that covers all the bases of one cultural and economic world system – starting with Equal Money.

Youtube’s community guidelines, or why when you spread hate about Hitler it isn’t hate speech

Social media on the internet not only connects people but also becomes a showcase, nicely assembled in one place, where one can observe arrogance, double standards, and opinions of society. All driven by the collective and individual patterns of emotions and feelings we are addicted to and which move us in the real as well as the virtual world. Especially online, where we can step back from it through resuming our physical daily lives, this spectacle of emotions and feelings resembles a composition, a song of energy surges which has, over the centuries, enabled us to claim our superiority of the planet. This collective self-manipulation runs so deep that we are, literally and figuratively, blind to our double standards. All the while these ‘dancing energetic surges’ are kept in place by the powers that be, the powers that dish out the money for us – us, the virtual citizens, to play with each other, or as we call it: to communicate.

At Desteni we recently received a heavy dose of this sort of ‘keeping the kids in check’ when our Youtube channels were closed down for apparent “violation of community guidelines”. Interesting parallels that coincided at this time were that we took a stance on the abuse that is presented to us on a daily basis. We began to make videos that would explain in detail how the hate that was being spread against us as a group was without foundation, without merit or justification. As a group we stand up for life and for what is best for all, this of course includes haters too. Countering rampant abuse by haters was thus performed within the context of valuing life above all else.

So how does that violate community guidelines? It does not, nor do any other videos produced by Destonians lie outside the principle of oneness and equality. Though what Destonian videos do address, through the stance on world equality, is the reluctance and resistance of the world to see that each one of us has created and is responsible for the atrocities of the world. Although this is acknowledged fact, though not perceived holistically throughout society, the deceptive ways we exist in are neatly categorised as politics. Meaning the fraudulent claim, that Destonians have violated community guidelines, is derived from the same energetic source that currently wages war in Libya under the guise of humanitarian aid.

The parallel strands under which deception thus operates, in this example, are the need to gain and the need to defend. On the one hand, it is the need to gain access to the finest oil on the planet, Libyan oil, by the powers that be, which is a conglomerate of the nations with the most money and most uncompromising forms of capitalistic slavery. On the other hand, it is the need to defend any form of change by the same powers, such as the radical change of world equality we advocate, which embraces and encompasses a new system that eventually transforms all, including the powers-that-be, into non-existence.

Another perspective on the double standard of Youtube’s “community guidelines”, or violation thereof through hate speech, is blatant when the hated enemy has been approved. When those in power have decided that certain figures provide an outlet for the common folk, to vent their emotions that dance to the tune of anger and aggression. The example par excellence is the Hitler abuse on Youtube. He’s the collective dead enemy, the persistent scapegoat, used and abused over decades now, he can always and forever be pulled up in any form, as comedy, as ideology, to serve in the name of the system and to rally up a united front.

In reality, the situation I have outlined above reflects the true nature of our system, encapsulated in  Youtube’s “community guidelines”, which are guidelines to the hypocrisy, the duplicity and the treachery of our society we have come to accept and defend.

The development of real guidelines, for a world of principle and equality, will come about through an Equal Money System – regardless of Youtube…
